Physics of error correlation on a quantum computer

Abstract:
In the standard gate model of quantum computing, repeated error-correcting procedures are required in order to achieve fault-tolerant quantum computation. Quantum error correction works provided that the errors on different qubits are not correlated. However, even if the qubits do not interact directly with each other, they do see the same environment, which could in principle generate correlated errors. I will discuss this possibility by modeling the environment as bosonic bath, and discuss the physics of error correlation.
