醉月湖講座Lakeside Lecture Series

演講者:Professor Jordan Stoyanov (Newcastle University, UK)
講 題:Intriguing Problems from Combinatorics, Algebra and Analysis Solvable by Probability
時 間:2012年12月24日 (星期一) 14:00~15:00
地 點:臺灣大學天文數學館202室
茶 點:13:30~14:00
摘 要:
The goal of this lecture is to show that diverse mathematical problems from the above mentioned areas can be solved quite elegantly by using ideas and techniques from Probability. Sometime these are the only available solutions. Some of the following topics will be discussed in detail:

_ Combinatorial and algebraic identities.
_ Buridan Donkey story (BD). Random walk in random environment (JD).
_ A problem involving two dice, fair or unfair?
_ Toss 15 dice, if your sum = your product, you win 1 million! Ready to play?
_ Bernoulli LLN and Weierstrass theorem by Bernstein polynomials.
_ Many ways to interpret and solve the equation X + Y = XY .
_ Values of the Riemann zeta functions via Cauchy distribution.
_ Old Uspensky's problem and its far extensions.
_ A few exercises, conjectures and unsolved problems.

The material will be addressed to a wide audience: undergraduate and graduate students in mathematical sciences, as well as to professionals.
